Pre-Concert Lecture at 3 PM

Inspired by the balconies and soaring interior of San Marco Cathedral in Venice, Andrea Gabrieli and his nephew Giovanni were masters of combining multiple choirs with spatial texture to magical effects. Their beautifully balanced works for single and antiphonal choirs span the radical changes in musical style between the 16th and 17th centuries—a period of transition that carried over to Northern Germany and had a dramatic impact upon the direction of music of the Western world. With guest artist Doron David Sherwin, cornetto.
