In cantatas Du sollst Gott deinen Herren and Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende, Bach juxtaposes intellect and emotion to convey the Lutheran dichotomy of rule versus gospel — brilliantly contrasting the complex rules of counterpoint with a perfect freedom of expression. In Cantata 77, he suggests the impossibility of living to the letter of the law by writing a devilishly difficult part for an early slide-trumpet called a tromba da tirarsi. Guest artist John Thiessen has graciously agreed to play it — and will also display his considerable talents on natural trumpet in Corelli's beautiful trumpet sonata.
