Maurice Duruflé

Born in Louviers, France, in 1902, Maurice Duruflé (1902–1986) began his musical education as a chorister at Rouen. Moving to Paris in 1919, he showed exceptional talents as an organist, winning several awards for interpretation and improvisation. In 1929, he won the composition prize in a contest organized by the Friends of the Organ for his Prélude, Adagio et Choral varié du Veni Creator. Many of his works show the profound influence Gregorian chant had on him: his Requiem (1947) was based on Gregorian themes from the Requiem Mass.
