Sara Couden

Sara Couden, contralto, has sung with musical organizations around the greater Bay Area, including Berkeley/West Edge Opera (Antonia’s Mother, Tales of Hoffman), Livermore Valley Opera (Mamma Lucia, Cavalleria rusticana), Oakland Opera (Narciso/Rumsfeld, Agrippina 2000), Martinez Opera (Belle Voci concert), Lamplighters (Ruth, Pirates of Penzance), Monterey Symphony (Alto Soloist, Messiah) and San Jose Symphonic Choir (2nd Alto Soloist, Matthaus Passion). She graduated with a Masters in Music from the San Francisco Conservatory in June 2011, at which institution she played roles such as Bradamante (Alcina), Cornelia (Giulio Cesare), the Principessa (Suor Angelica), and Baba (The Medium), and sang several solos (among them the “Esurientes”) with the Conservatory Chamber Choir. Roles for the 2011/12 season include Dryad (Ariadne auf Naxos, Berkeley/West Edge Opera), Katisha (The Mikado, Townsend Opera Players and Roleplayers Theater) and Mrs. Ott (Susannah, SF Parlor Opera). Awards include the Elie Silver award from the Holt Competition, and an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council San Francisco Division. Sara is a member of Dolora Zajick’s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices, and will be playing Mother Goose in the Music Academy of the West’s production of The Rake’s Progress this summer.
