Text: Ne iactes

Jacob Handl (1550–1591)

Original Text English Translation

Ne iactes,
quia laus proprio sordescit in ore.
Qui sese laudat,
laudis munere fraudat,
sese vicinos
iactans habet undique pravos.
Vincat opus verbum,
minuit iactantia famam.
Boast not,
for self-praise turns to dirt in the mouth.
He who praises himself
steals the reward of praise;
In boasting,
he has wicked neighbors all around.
Works beat words.
Boasting lowers your reputation.
