Jacob Handl (1550–1591)
| Original Text | English Translation |
| Ne iactes, quia laus proprio sordescit in ore. Qui sese laudat, laudis munere fraudat, sese vicinos iactans habet undique pravos. Vincat opus verbum, minuit iactantia famam. |
Boast not, for self-praise turns to dirt in the mouth. He who praises himself steals the reward of praise; In boasting, he has wicked neighbors all around. Works beat words. Boasting lowers your reputation. |
